Dr. Stephen J. Pakola is a seasoned professional in the biopharmaceutical industry with more than three decades of experience. His journey in the field is marked by his extensive contributions, leadership roles and a perpetually curious mind.
From earning his MD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1994 to becoming the Chief Medical Officer at REGENXBIO in 2019, Dr. Pakola has continually pushed the boundaries of biopharmaceutical innovation. His work has spanned across preclinical and clinical development, regulatory affairs, and medical affairs, and across small molecules, biologics and gene therapies.
Dr. Pakola's career accomplishments are reflected in his tenure at multiple organizations including Aerpio Therapeutics, Amakem Inc., ThromboGenics, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Organon, and Quintiles Inc., where he played a crucial role in advancing multiple therapeutic areas. As example of his extraordinary dedication, he led the program for Jetrea® from its inception through successful BLA and MAA submissions, which marked a global first for the treatment of vitreomacular adhesion including macular hole.
As a thought leader in the industry, Dr. Pakola has constantly sought to share his insights and knowledge. His medical research has been widely published in numerous significant peer-reviewed journals. He has also contributed in the academic realm with his participation in countless clinical trials, as well as a named inventor on several issued patents. His contributions to the retina community and commitment to patients with vision-threatening diseases led to his receipt of the "Summit of Excellence" Lifetime Achievement Award at the CTS (Clinical Trials at the Summit) in 2022.
